On Sunday, 8/2/2026, at approximately 1033 hours, I was dispatched to [REDACTED], in reference to a child abuse report.
Upon arrival, I met with the complainant, [REDACTED], who stated that she had taken her daughter, juvenile [REDACTED BY AGENCY], to a waterpark on 8/1/2026 at approximately 0900 hours, and her husband, Pete Truman, remained home with their juvenile son, [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. At approximately 1028 hours, Pete called [REDACTED], stating that something had happened and instructed her not to freak out. Pete told [REDACTED] that [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had pulled the microwave off the countertop, and Pete had smacked him with a backhand to keep him from getting hit by the microwave.
I observed a sizeable mark on [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’ face that appeared to be a handprint with finger lines. The marking was very red with bruising and busted capillaries. Photographic evidence of [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’ injuries was captured via my body-worn camera.
I did not observe any damage on the microwave, which did not corroborate what Pete had told [REDACTED].
[REDACTED] advised that she told Pete that he needed to go to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, and I was unable to get a statement from him because he was not on scene.
Due to the marks on [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’ face being inconsistent with a pushing motion required to move a [REDACTED BY AGENCY] old from harm’s way, and being more consistent with a strike, a warrant was obtained for cruelty to children in the first degree.
I contacted Floyd County E911 and made contact with the Captain for Rome PD. I advised him of the situation, and he stated that he was currently on special detail at the hospital where Pete was located. He advised that they would arrest Pete if he were to be discharged.
I completed an online DFCS referral for this incident.
