On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at approximately 12:17 AM, I was dispatched to 2500 Osborne Road, St. Marys, GA 31558 (Camden County) in reference to a male slumped over in the driver seat of the vehicle. I responded to the scene in patrol unit #704 without the use of my emergency lights and siren. Corporal Beightel arrived on scene a short time later.
Upon my arrival, I observed a white GMC Acadia bearing GA registration [REDACTED BY AGENCY] with a male slumped over the driver seat. The vehicle was on and the driver had his foot on the gas pedal but the vehicle was in park.
I approached the driver on the driver side window, announced myself and the department that I worked for. The driver did not respond. I knocked on the window and no response. I then opened the car door and tried to wake the individual by calling out to him and I completed a sternum rub.
The male, later identified as Mr. Alexander Young, came to seconds later. Mr. Young appeared under in the influence. I asked Mr. Young to step out of the vehicle and walk to the front of Corporal Beightel’s (SMPD 108) vehicle which was directly behind Mr. Young’s vehicle.
As he stepped out of the vehicle, Mr. Young stumbled out and was unable to walk straight to the vehicle. We asked Mr. Young how much he had to drink this evening and he stated not too many. He stated he had high tolerance for alcohol so he knows he was not intoxicated. Officer Thornton (SMPD 124) arrived on scene and Mr. Young agreed to complete Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST).
Based on the results of the SFST, I concluded that Mr. Young was too impaired to operate a vehicle upon the roadway safely. He was then placed under arrest for DUI. Mr. Young was then read Georgia’s implied consent from a prepared card. After asking him if he understood what was read to him, he refused to take the State-administered breath test.
Mr. Young was then placed in the back of my patrol vehicle and transported to the Camden County for booking. I charged Mr. Young with D.U.I (citation #011213). I gave him a court date of August 4, 2023 at 9:00AM. Mr. Youngs’ vehicle was removed from the scene by Kelley’s Towing.
