On September 18th at approximately 00:03 hours I, Deputy Dawson, was dispatched to [REDACTED] in reference to a trauma call where the complainant believed that they may have accidentally injured a two month old. Fire and Emergency Medical Services were also dispatched.
Upon my arrival fire had already arrived and one of the Firemen was holding the sleeping baby. I did not notice any obvious injuries on the baby at the time. I noticed some redness around the eyes possibly due to crying. I then stepped in and spoke with the complainant Mr. Braxton Floyd who had obviously been crying and seemed worried and apologetic. I asked him what had happened and he stated that the baby had started screaming and believed he was hungry and tried to feed him.
At this time he pointed out the bottle on the couch which was still full. He stated that he believed that maybe it was his sinus bothering him because the baby did not want the bottle and began to flail his arms. Mr. Floyd continued to state that he tried to hold the baby and then heard a pop from his baby’s shoulder he picked it up and it was limp. I at this time after talking with Mr. Floyd did not suspect any intentional harm toward the infant from Mr. Floyd. I continued to speak with him and stated that I wasn’t a medical professional but it possibly could be a dislocation.
Emergency Medical Services then arrived on scene and Deputy Reynolds behind them. Emergency Technicians checked on the baby and stated that there was some tenderness and that the baby did not like to be touched in the area of his possibly injured arm. They also stated that there was a mark above his eye brow but no obvious signs of abuse. It was at this time I decided that I would do a report and a DFACS referral in order to have it on file. EMS stated that they were going to let the parents take the baby to the hospital in their personal car. All of units on scene went back in service.
At approximately 01:51 while on another call for service with Deputy Reeves, I was dispatched to what I believed to be the Trion Emergency Room in reference to the call on Hawk Ridge. Once the call for service was complete I then began to head to Trion ER. While enroute I was advised to call [REDACTED] with DFACS. She had just arrived on scene at Floyd Atrium in Rome Georgia. She advised that she would call me back with any information or if she had questions. She called me back at approximately 03:15 hours and stated she needed an investigator.
I spoke with Investigator Flood and he advised me to get some more information and call him back. I then called Atrium and spoke with Charge Nurse [REDACTED] and she stated that there was “no way this was an accident.” She continued to state that the baby had a broken hybris and that he also had severe head injuries and they were going to be sending him out to CHOA (Children’s Hospital of Atlanta) due to the extent of the infants injuries.
I advised Investigator Flood and stated that he would be enroute to them. He then called me back and stated that they were going to be on the way to Atlanta and advised me to get my report and the referral.
