On Friday, August 14th, 2026, at approximately 0028 hours, the Summerville Police Department was dispatched to the area of Highland Avenue and Commerce Street in reference to a motorcycle that had struck a curb and sustained damage. Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy Claxton was on scene and advised that the driver was but possibly intoxicated.
Upon arrival, Officer Campbell observed a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle facing northbound, partially stuck against a concrete curb on Highland Street, just before the stop sign to enter Commerce Street. Officer Campbell observed minor cosmetic damage to Mr. Alexander’s vehicle. No other uninjured property damage was observed.
Officer Campbell made contact with the driver, Mr. Eldon James Alexander. Mr. Alexander stated that he was traveling northbound on Highland Avenue approaching the intersection of Commerce Street when he looked to his left to see if he was safe to enter the roadway. Mr. Alexander stated that this was when he struck the curb on Highland Street.
While speaking with Mr. Alexander, Officer Campbell did detect the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Mr. Alexander’s person. Mr. Alexander admitted to consuming two alcoholic beverages at a bar he visited in Rome, Ga. Officer Campbell also detected slurred speech as Mr. Alexander spoke and observed that his eyes were bloodshot.
Officer Campbell asked Mr. Alexander if he would participate in some field sobriety tests, to which he agreed. Officer Campbell first administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes, and onset of nystagmus before 45 degrees in both eyes were all observed, for a total of six clues.
The next test administered was “the walk-andturn test.” Officer Campbell observed Mr. Alexander unable to walk heel-to-toe, taking too many steps, and walking unsteadily.
Next, Mr. Alexander performed a one-leg stand test. Mr. Alexander was able to perform the test correctly.
Based on Mr. Alexander’s driving behavior, his physical appearance and signs of impairment, and observation during standardized field sobriety tests, Officer Campbell determined that Mr. Alexander was less safe to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
Officer Campbell advised Mr. Alexander of Georgia Implied Consent and requested that he submit to a blood draw, which he agreed to. Officer Campbell transported Mr. Alexander to Atrium Station 12 (170 Farrar Drive). Paramedic [REDACTED] administered the blood draw via a Georgia Bureau of Investigation Blood Alcohol Toxicology Kit. Officer Campbell took possession of the toxicology kit after the blood draw was complete.
Officer Campbell then transported Mr. Alexander to the Chattooga County Jail for processing and booking. Mr. Alexander was issued citations for driving while under the influence of alcohol, less safe, and failure to maintain a lane. Next list “Gills Towing” was able to arrive at the incident scene and take possession of Mr. Alexander’s vehicle.
