On 05-19-2023, I assisted Officer VanPelt on a traffic stop. Officer VanPelt had observed a vehicle that was given as a BOLO not able to maintain a single lane.
Upon speaking with the driver who was made known as Mr. Ryan Gifford, I did notice that his eyes were constricted. Mr. Gifford did agree to take a breath test to which on first testing came back as 0.08 grams of alcohol and then 0.00 grams after a second test.
Upon looking in the vehicle, I did see two canisters of pressurized air in the vehicle. I did ask Mr. Gifford if he had been huffing the air. He advised that he had been taking multiple hits of the canisters while in operation of the vehicle.
Mr. Gifford was asked to step out of the vehicle and gave consent to have the vehicle searched and the canisters removed from the vehicle. Both canisters were still cold to the touch and had condensation on them.
At this time Mr. Gifford was placed into custody for DUI. Implied Consent was read and accepted for a blood sample. I transported Mr. Gifford to EMS Station 12 to retrieve the blood sample and then to the Chattooga County Jail with no further issue.
Officer VanPelt stood by with the vehicle until a family member picked it up.
