CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. – On Monday, April 29, 2024, Grant Matthew Shaw, a former Woodstock Police officer, received a $50K bond regarding his involuntary manslaughter charge for shooting and killing a 20-year-old man in October 2023. Shaw was indicted for killing Emmanuel Millard while officers attempted to arrest him.
His recent bond conditions included barring him from possessing weapons and ordering him to avoid Millard’s family.
At the time, following standard protocols regarding officer-involved shootings, officials placed Shaw on administrative leave while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation independently investigated the incident. Shaw later submitted his resignation.
When the GBI concluded the investigation, the case was transferred to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
The fatal shooting occurred on October 12, 2023, after officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on Millard’s vehicle at approximately 10:45 PM as it traveled near Hames Road and Highway 92. Police said the suspect committed multiple traffic violations.
Millard led officers on a dangerous pursuit into Cobb County. Officials stated, “The suspect ran off the road in multiple locations, nearly struck multiple civilian vehicles, and attempted to strike police vehicles.”
Officers utilized a PIT maneuver, causing Millard’s Hyundai to crash near Old Mountain Park Road and Highway 92. Shaw fired one shot while officers tried to remove the suspect from the vehicle and detain him, all of which Shaw’s body camera recorded.
Millard suffered a critical wound and was transported to a local hospital. Two days later, he succumbed to his injury.
Officials reported that three patrol vehicles sustained damage, but luckily, no officers were hurt. This case is pending.
