On April 25th, 2025, I, PFC Bethune was working at Rome High School as the school resource officer and during my shift I was notified of an on going fight at the 4 columns between several students. Upon making my arrival admin already had the students separated and began to take them to separate areas in order for the investigation to begin. Upon speaking with the Principal he stated that it was between Mekhi Mason, and Emanuel Johnson, and I was familiar with these 2. Several days prior, I told told them and their friends that if they were to get in a fight at school they all would be placed under arrest. On April 24th, 2025 at the bus ramp admin and myself had to separate the parties involved to keep them from fighting as well.

After being informed about the incident, I proceeded to the Principal’s office, where I was able to view video footage. On the video, I observed Makhi walking out of the counselors’ office area and toward the four columns, which is where the other group would eventually be. While watching the video, I observed Makhi standing there. As [VICTIM #1], Emmanuel Johnson, [WITNESS #1], and Assistant Principal [WITNESS #2] approached on the other side of the table separating the two groups, Makhi proceeded to walk over and stand between Emmanuel and [VICTIM #1]. On the video, I observed [VICTIM #1] step on Makhi’s shoe, which did not appear to be malicious. Upon this happening, Makhi proceeded to shove [VICTIM #1]. After Makhi shoved [VICTIM #1], Emmanuel turned around, dropped his backpack, and proceeded to shove Makhi (I did not notice this part until after the arrest and viewing the video again). Following the shove, the incident continued down the hallway, with administrators and other staff trying to intervene to prevent a fight. While proceeding down the hallway, [WITNESS #1] tried to step in, but Emmanuel pushed him away. [WITNESS #1] then bladed his body in a southpaw stance, pulled up his pants, and put his fist up as if to fight. After this, administrators still stayed between the two parties to prevent a fight. While preventing the fight, Emmanuel eventually had to be restrained by several staff and administrators until he calmed down, and they were able to get him to walk away.

Due to the above listed information gathered from security footage of the incident, Emmanuel Johnson was placed under arrest on the charge of simple assault and disruption of a public school and Mekhi Mason was charged with simple battery and disruption of a public school.

Prior to placing Emmanuel into handcuffs he also stated that on the night before the incident Mekhi arrived at his residence with a firearm in order to get him to fight.

Both parties were transported to the Floyd County Jail without incident.

E-911 did check to see if anyone called about someone with a firearm at Emmanuel’s residence and was unable to locate anything.
