On 9/28/23, I was dispatched to [700 BLOCK] Pitts Chapel Road for an aggravated assault incident. I made contact with [VICTIM #1] who was obviously emotionally distraught. I asked her if she was okay and told her to sit on the front porch while I located Thomas Buchanan. He was inside of the residence and much calmer than Mrs. [VICTIM #1].
I told him to sit down on the recliner. He stated that he woke up and Mrs. [VICTIM #1] started yelling at him. He stated he pushed her out of the way. Mrs. [VICTIM #1] stated that they were arguing (neither party could tell me why they were arguing) when he grabbed her by the neck and punched her in the face multiple times.
I could not locate any bruising and asked Deputy Morris to take a second look. Deputy Morris found distinct bruising around Mrs. [VICTIM #1]’s neck and showed them to me. Deputy Morris and me walked inside to arrest Buchanan for aggravated assault.
While escorting Buchanan to my patrol car, he purposefully dove head first onto the ground. He was briefly disoriented so I requested EMS. I placed Buchanan in the rear of my patrol car and he proceeded to bang his head against the cage. Deputy Morris and me attempted to stop him from harming himself by placing him in the seat belt. However, the seat belt wouldn’t lock him in place.
I contacted dispatch and advised them that Buchanan was actively banging his head against the cage. He continued to do so all the way to the jail. Buchanan calmed down once we pulled into the sally port of the jail.
EMS attended to him at the jail and transported him to Atrium. I sat with him at the hospital until he was cleared by medical personnel at which point I transported him back to the jail. He was released to booking staff.
Pictures were taken by Deputy Morris. Warrants will be secured at a later date.
