[NARRATIVE #1 on July 11, 2026]

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at approximately 2128 hours, Liberty County dispatch received an iPhone crash notification plotting in the area of Smiley Hall Road and South Coastal Highway from a phone number of [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. Liberty County Deputy John Wise was dispatched to this area regarding this matter.

Deputy John Wise arrived in the area at approximately 2132 hours, locating a white 2016 Dodge Durango in the ditch near Smiley Hall Road bearing Georgia registration numbers [REDACTED]. Deputy John Wise reported the vehicle had airbag deployment but wasn’t able to locate a driver or any subjects around the vehicle. Liberty County dispatch advised the vehicle was registered to a Mr. Demetrius Carlton James of Hinesville, Georgia. Deputy John Wise and Deputy Alexis Williams continued working the crash without a driver or occupants present. The vehicle was removed from the scene by the next list rotation towing service, Clarks Towing.

At approximately 2135 hours, a male subject contacted Liberty County Dispatch by calling 911 from the phone number [REDACTED BY AGENCY], wanting to report his vehicle stolen, but the call kept disconnecting. Deputy Alexis Williams placed a call to this phone number and spoke with a male subject later identified as Mr. Demetrius Carlton James. He advised Deputy Alexis Williams that his vehicle was stolen from his mother’s residence, which is located at [REDACTED BY AGENCY] in Hinesville, Georgia. Deputy Alexis Williams asked him what approximate time the theft occurred, and he advised that it occurred around the time of this report. He further stated that he used the push-button start to crank the vehicle while he was inside the apartment but didn’t know how it was stolen when he had the key the whole time. He also stated that he had been at his mother’s residence this whole time.

At approximately 2154 hours, Deputy Alexis Williams contacted me via cellphone, advising me of the male subject’s statement, providing me with the address to his mother’s residence at [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. Deputy Alexis Williams advised me that the male subject was located at that address, awaiting law enforcement to arrive regarding his vehicle being stolen. I advised her that I would be en route to that address to speak with him. At approximately 2156 hours, I advised Liberty County dispatch that I was en route to [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and arrived on scene at 2212 hours. It should be noted that at 2210 hours, the male subject called 911 advising that he was located at his mother’s residence at [REDACTED BY AGENCY].

Upon my arrival, I wasn’t sure where Apartment [REDACTED] was located, and I placed a call to the male subject via cellphone at [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and was able to locate him after he answered the phone. I introduced myself to the male subject identified as Mr. Demetrius Carlton James. I asked him what happened tonight, and he said his vehicle was stolen. I asked him what kind of vehicle was stolen, and he said a 2016 Dodge Durango, white in color. I asked him where the vehicle was stolen from, and he said it was stolen from an apartment complex off Gause Street in Hinesville, where he was visiting a female friend. He further stated he left his vehicle running at the complex while he walked to the store located on the corner of Gause Street and Memorial Drive, and when he returned, the vehicle was gone.

Mr. Demetrius Carlton James then states that he contacted 911 to report the car stolen and walked to his mother’s residence. I asked Mr. Demetrius Carlton James if he would be able to provide me with a written statement regarding the theft of his vehicle, and he replied Yes. I provided him with a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office voluntary statement form, which he completed and signed. I then reviewed his statement, which consisted of his verbal statement to me regarding this matter. I also confirmed that the phone number came back to his phone.

I asked Mr. Demetrius Carlton James if I could see his call log on his phone to confirm that Deputy Alexis Williams and I contacted his phone from that number. Mr. Demetrius Carlton James agreed and handed me his phone, which was identified as an iPhone with his call logs open. I was able to confirm that I contacted his phone from the number of [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and also that his phone called 911 at approximately 2128 hours, which was at the time of the crash. It should be noted that I observed several more calls on his call log where 911 was called.

After reviewing his statement and call logs, I believed Mr. Demetrius Carlton James was being untruthful about the events he was reporting regarding his vehicle being stolen. The following facts are what led me to believe that he was being untruthful about this matter. Liberty County dispatch received an iPhone crash notification from his phone number at 2128 hours, reporting a crash, which was confirmed on his call logs.

Liberty County dispatch also received several more calls, one pinging in the area of Bacontown Road, which is located not far from the crash site. They received another call pinging in the area of East Oglethorpe Highway, which would put his phone leaving the area, going back towards Hinesville, Georgia and another call pinging in the area of Brights Lake Road, still travelling back to Hinesville, Georgia and a final call in the area of [REDACTED BY AGENCY].

I then questioned him further regarding the matter of his vehicle being stolen, asking him what really happened tonight. He asked me what I meant by what really happened. I explained to him that when you call 911, our dispatch center can ping your calls to the area you’re located in when the call is made. I advised him that, according to that, he was nowhere near the city limits of Hinesville, Georgia, when the first call was made, and he stated right.

I then asked him again what happened tonight. He stated “so I ain’t even gonna count to ya me and girlfriend was talking and I took her to a juke in Midway Georgia where we was drinking and while we were inside the car was gone”. I asked him where this juke was located, and he advised around Carter Road. I asked him if his female friend had taken the vehicle, and he stated no, that she was inside with me. He further states that he was inside shooting pool and consuming alcohol and went outside and noticed his vehicle was gone.

He then proceeded to ask if he needed to rewrite his written statement due to it being false. I questioned him further about the 911 calls he made and events regarding his vehicle. I advised him that we had located his vehicle, which was involved in a crash. I further explained that we located his vehicle by his iPhone, calling 911 from the crash notification settings on his iPhone. He continued to deny any involvement in the crash or knowledge of the crash.

At this time, I advised he was being placed under arrest for a false report of a crime and to place his hands behind his back, which he complied. Mr. Demetrius Carlton James was placed in double-locked handcuffs, which were checked for fit behind his back. A search of his person was conducted incident to arrest, with no contraband being located. Cpl. Kevin Burgess escorted him to the rear of his patrol unit, where he was secured.

Mr. Demetrius Carlton James spontaneously uttered to another female on scene who asked why he was being arrested, a bith in Midway, Georgia, took my car and wrecked it, and I reported it stolen. Mr. Demetrius Carlton James asked to smoke a cigarette, which I denied, and he stated, “Come on man, I told you the truth even though you had to get it out of me.” He further stated “Look man, this is the first time this sht ever happened to me, and I didn’t want it to be on my people that’s from Midway so I apologize about that.” He further states, “I didn’t know that was gonna happen, and the first thing that came to mind was to report the car stolen, and my people told me to report the car stolen, and I listened to them and I apologize.”

Cpl. Kevin Burgess transported Mr. Demetrius Carlton James to the Liberty County Jail, where he was released to booking staff without incident. Cpl. Kevin Burgess cleared his rear seat before and after transport, with no contraband being located.

I will be submitting two arrest warrant applications to Liberty County Magistrate Court for review on the following offenses against Mr. Demetrius Carlton James: False statements or writings, 16-10-20 (Felony) and False report of a crime, 16-10-26 (Misdemeanor).

I will also obtain a copy of the Cad report, 911 calls, accident report, jail calls and a copy of his written statement, which will be included in my case file once it’s submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. I recommend that this case be closed at this time.

[NARRATIVE #2 on July 11, 2026]

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 22:12 hours, I arrived at [300 BLOCK] West Memorial Drive to assist Sergeant Tomlinson with an investigation involving a stolen vehicle and a vehicle crash.

Sergeant Tomlinson conducted his investigation and placed Mr. Demetrius Carlton James under arrest for making false statements and filing a false report of a crime. I secured Mr. James in double-locked handcuffs, checking for fit behind his back. I performed a search incident to the arrest, during which no contraband was found, and then placed him in the rear seat of my patrol vehicle. This vehicle had been searched prior to Mr. James entering, with no contraband discovered.

I transported Mr. James to the Liberty County Jail. During the transport, he repeatedly asked questions and made a spontaneous statement at 22:55 hours, claiming that the female he took to the juke joint in Midway had taken his vehicle without his permission and crashed it. He advised that she had contacted him, stating she had been in a crash. At 23:02 hours, he stated he and a friend had followed her and witnessed her crash the vehicle, and advised his phone was still inside the car, which he then retrieved.

These two statements contradict each other and are inconsistent with the other statements made during Sergeant Tomlinson’s interview with him.
