On Sunday, June 12th, 2026, at approximately 0500 hours, I, Deputy C. Maples, was dispatched to Georgia State Route 401 (Interstate 75) northbound near mile marker 179 in reference to a motor vehicle accident.
Dispatchers with the Monroe County E-911 division relayed that injuries were unknown, the airbags were deployed, and the roadway was not blocked.
I responded to this accident with the emergency equipment in my patrol car activated. (Code One)
Upon my arrival, I discovered a gray Honda Accord against the guardrail on the left shoulder facing the opposite direction. This vehicle was also partially blocking the left lane.
At this time, I made contact with a black male, I identified as Gregory Lockett. I immediately noticed a strong odor of raw marijuana coming from Gregory’s person. I noticed that Gregory seemed disoriented and lost as he paced beside his crashed vehicle.
I asked Gregory if he was ok. He stated yes. I asked Gregory if he could remember what happened. Gregory stated that he did not remember what happened. As Gregory spoke, I noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.
I asked Gregory if he had been drinking. Gregory stated that he had drunk some tequila around 11. I asked Gregory if he would perform field sobriety. He stated yes.
I asked Gregory to remove his backpack.
I asked Gregory if he wore contacts or glasses. He stated that he wore glasses, but they were in his vehicle. I asked Gregory if he had any head, neck, back, or eye injuries that would keep him from performing field sobriety. Gregory stated no.
The first test I asked Gregory to perform was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus.
I instructed Gregory to put his feet together with his hands down by his side. I instructed Gregory to stand in that position while I continued. I informed Gregory that I would hold my finger approximately 12 – 15 inches in front of his nose. I informed him to keep his head still and move only his eyes. I asked Gregory if he understood and he stated yes.
During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Gregory swayed several times. Gregory had to be reminded to move only his eyes and hold his head still. I observe six out of six possible clues, including lack of pursuit in both eyes, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes, and onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees in both eyes.
Prior to performing the one-legged stand and walk and turn, I assessed the ground to ensure Gregory’s safety. I determined that the ground firm and had a downhill grade and was not suitable for Gregory to safely perform the next task.
Next, I asked Gregory if he would give me a preliminary breath sample. He stated yes. Gregory gave two breath samples, both registered a high positive for mouth alcohol content.
Gregroy was then placed intro handcuffs behind his back. Which were then double locked and checked for fit.
Here, I read Gregory his Implied Consent Notice of Suspects Age 21 years or older. I asked Gregory if he would submit to a state administered chemical test of his blood. He stated yes.
I requested that the on-scene paramedics with the Monroe County Emergency Services assist. Paramedics attempted twice to extract blood from Gregory.
At this time, Gregory was secured in the rear of my patrol vehicle. I searched Gregory’s backpack and located a green leafy substance wrapped in grey baggie. This substance smelled heavily like marijuana. I also located an empty bottle of tequila. I also found a scale and lighter.
I searched Gregory’s vehicle and found more of the green leafy substance in the driver seat and floorboard.
Deputy Caldwell made contact with a witness, [WITNESS #1]. [WITNESS #1] stated he had been traveling behind the gray Honda Accord through Macon. He stated that the vehicle failed to maintain lane several times. He stated that it often drifted into the right emergency lane. [WITNESS #1] stated that vehicle eventually failed to maintain its lane before the driver overcorrected and struck the guardrail on the left shoulder.
While in route to the hospital Gregory stated that he refused due to not wanting to be stuck by a needle again. Gregory was then transported and turned over to the Monroe County Jail. Here, he was issued several traffic related citations.
