On 08/18/2026 at approximately 0710 hours, while on patrol in the area of I-75 northbound near mile marker 186, I detected a gray Nissan Altima bearing Pennsylvania registration [REDACTED] traveling at 85 MPH in a posted 70 MPH zone. The vehicle’s speed was confirmed using a ProLaser device, serial number LF13770.
I activated my emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 187.
Upon approaching the vehicle, I made contact with the driver, identified as Mr. Ontario Smith. I requested Mr. Smith’s driver’s license, which he provided. I identified myself and informed Mr. Smith of the reason for the traffic stop. While speaking with Mr. Smith, I detected the odor of marijuana and an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle.
I returned to my patrol vehicle and ran Mr. Smith’s Georgia driver’s license number through NCIC. I discovered Mr. Smith had an active warrant out of Bibb County, Georgia, for sexual battery.
At that time, I requested the assistance of Corporal Manning and Officer McEachern with the traffic stop. Upon their arrival, I returned to Mr. Smith and requested that he step out of the vehicle, to which he complied. Mr. Smith was placed in handcuffs behind his back. The handcuffs were checked for proper fit and secured, and Mr. Smith was placed in the rear of my patrol vehicle.
I then requested the passenger exit the vehicle, to which she complied. Based on the odor of marijuana and alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle, I conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. During the search, I discovered approximately $2,345 in U.S. currency in the center console.
After conducting the search, I returned to Mr. Smith in the rear of my patrol vehicle and read him his Miranda rights. After doing so, I informed Mr. Smith of the odors I had detected and asked whether he had consumed any alcoholic beverages or smoked marijuana. Mr. Smith stated that he had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana; however, he stated that he had done so at approximately 0200 hours.
I then requested Mr. Smith perform standardized field sobriety exercises, to which he refused. I subsequently read Mr. Smith the Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Persons 21 or Over and requested a blood sample. Mr. Smith refused to provide a blood sample.
During this time, I requested Corporal Manning and Officer McEachern count the money located in the center console. I asked Mr. Smith whether he wished to take possession of the money or release it to the passenger. Mr. Smith stated that he wished for the passenger to take possession of the money.
The passenger was found to have a valid driver’s license. Therefore, the vehicle was released to the passenger.
Mr. Smith was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center without incident.
