On Thursday, June 4th, 2026 at approximately 9:09 p.m. Monroe County Dispatch advised deputies that they received a call stating a man was holding his wife hostage at gun point located at [1500 BLOCK] Teagle Road. Sergeant Bryson, Deputy Grant and I, Corporal Sammons responded.

Upon our arrival, we parked on the side of Georgia 42 and walked to the residence from the road. While walking through the woods we could hear a male voice screaming in the direction we were headed as well as car doors slamming shut. Once we made it through the wood line, Deputy Grant and I began giving loud verbal commands for the male that was yelling to show us his hands. Upon hearing me speak for the first time, the male later identified as Richard Brubaker, turned towards a shed, grabbed a metal cooking sheet and ran out of my view.

Deputy Grant and I continued to approach Brubaker’s position. I could see Brubaker at this time come back into my view from inside of the shed and I observed him throw the cooking sheet. Sergeant Bryson was simultaneously approaching from the back side of the shed and also confirmed that Brubaker ran into the shed for a brief moment. Brubaker returned to where he was originally standing and after more loud verbal commands, he finally put his hands up while immediately yelling that he lived there and we were tripping indicating that he recognized us as law enforcement officers. Brubaker was instructed to lay on the ground and was placed into handcuffs by Deputy Grant and I. Brubaker was assisted to his feet and was searched for weapons.

While searching Brubaker, I located what I immediately recognized as a pill bottle on the inside of Brubaker’s pants which is a common location people that use illicit drugs attempt to hide them. Brubaker recognized I was attempting to retrieve the bottle and immediately began stating they were Viagra. The bottle appeared to be old with residue from a pre-existing label that had been peeled off on the outside. Inside of the bottle was a large clump of toilet paper shoved inside.

While doing this, Sergeant Bryson cleared the inside of the shed to make sure there were no other parties located inside. On the ground, I would observe the silver cooking sheet to have a crushed up white powdery substance on it that looked to be consistent with methamphetamine. Sergeant Bryson informed me that there were no other parties inside but that there was in fact several meth pipes and what looked like illicit drugs sitting out. From the doorway I also observed a broken pipe commonly used for smoking meth along with a torch style lighter sitting next to it.

I asked Brubaker where the gun was located at and he stated he did not have a gun that his wife and himself were just arguing. Brubaker continued to insist that no one put hands on anyone or anything. He continued to yell and scream profanities while we were attempting to talk to him. Brubaker appeared to be sweating profusely, overly anxious and had trouble maintaining his train of thought which is consistent with someone who is under the influence of meth.

[WITNESS #1] stated that she did ask her cousin to call 911 for her but when I asked her why she seemed hesitant to answer. [WITNESS #1] stated that her cousin probably heard Richard yelling in the back ground and that she just wanted things to calm down. [WITNESS #1] stated she was not harmed and was not sure why I would receive the call stating she was being held hostage at gun point. While inside of the shed looking for a firearm, we were able to see a white powdery substance that had been cut with a credit card into a line and covered up partially with a letter that started with “dear Robert”. Richard stated he did not know what the powder was and that he was clean. The card used also had Richard’s deceased mother’s name on it which Richard mentioned several times that she had just passed away.

Richard Brubaker was transported to the Monroe County Jail for further booking where he was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Drug related objects, Possession of Schedule II and Prescriptions not in Original Container. All evidence was entered into evidence at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and a GBI submission form was completed.
