On Saturday, May 23, 2026 at approximately 1158 hours, I, Deputy Shelnutt #9277, was made aware of an accident at the intersection of Allspice Drive and Underwood Drive. The caller was informing dispatch that a female driving a silver car had fell asleep at the wheel and could not wake her up. I advised dispatch to start EMS in case it was a medical episode.

When I arrived, the cars were no longer in contact and the driver of the silver sedan was still in the vehicle. I spoke with Deputy Pope #9263, who arrived on scene before I did and he advised it was possible impairment related and there were two open containers he saw in the car. Deputy Pope #9263 advised the driver had told the other party one story but was saying something different to him and would not give him her driver’s license.

I the started speaking with the driver, later identified by her Georgia Driver’s license as Ms. Ariel Washington. I asked Ms. Washington if I could have her driver’s license and I immediately noticed she had droopy eyelids and her speech was very mumbled and slurred. After repeated times of asking Ms. Washington for her driver’s license she finally gave them to me. I walked over to the driver side of the vehicle and could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage omitting from the vehicle. I asked Ms. Washington to step out of the vehicle and she stated she didn’t have to. I advised Ms. Washington she did have to step out that she was in an accident. Ms. Washington stated for what.

Ms. Washington eventually stepped out and was very unsteady on her feet and was not following directions. I could now smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage omitting from her person and her breath when she spoke. I attempted to conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Testing on Ms. Washington. I advised her to turn around and face me and she did. I noted her eyes were also glassy.

I asked Ms. Washington if she had any medical conditions, hit her head recently, or wore contacts or glasses. She stated she hit her head and indicated to a spot on her forehead, no mark was seen. I then held up the stimulant, for this case my right index finger, and asked if she could see it, she stated yes. I then instructed Ms. Washington to follow the tip of my finger with her eyes only and not to move her head.

After multiple attempts I was able to see lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes very distinctly. However due to Ms. Washington not following instructions and moving her head with her eyes, I was unable to conduct the rest of Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus.

I then asked Ms. Washington if she had any problems with her feet or legs that would prevent her from walking, she indicated no. I then asked if she felt comfortable walking in her shoes, she indicated yes. After multiple attempts, Ms. Washington was unable to follow instructions and just kept walking around and swaying unable to keep her balance. At this point I did not feel it was safe for Ms. Washington to attempt the rest of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and she was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI.

Ms. Washington was read Implied Consent Notice for Suspects ages 21 and over and she declined for Blood. Ms. Washington was transported to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and was turned over to Sgt. Castillo.
