On Sunday April 19, 2026, I responded to a call at 5485 Highway 81 South; Exxon in reference to shoplifting.
Upon my arrival, contact was made with the offender (Mr. Jonathan Chamlee), who at the time was outside of the Exxon, which I observed with a 12 pack of beer, some beef jerky, a small bottle of whiskey, which was all in his possession, along with a new can of tobacco dip, which he opened and put some into his mouth. Mr. Chamlee stated he went inside the store and got what he needed and stated “it’s mines, I’m king of the world.” Mr. Chamlee stated “I walked out and he tried to stop me, then I swung on him.”
I then searched, handcuffed doubled locked, detained Mr. Chamlee and placed him inside the back of my patrol unit. I then made my way inside the store, where contact was made the complainant (Mr. [WITNESS #1]) the store clerk, who stated Mr. Chamlee entered the store and took the listed items from the store without paying for them.
Mr. [WITNESS #1] then took me to the back office to view the recorded video camera footage. I observed Mr. Chamlee on the video camera footage pick up all of the listed items and brought them up to the check out counter where he put them for Mr. [WITNESS #1] to ring up the items. He the grabbed the items off of the counter and walked out of the door without paying for them, with Mr. [WITNESS #1] following behind him trying to stop him. Mr. Chamlee then turned around in the door way as Mr. [WITNESS #1] attempted to stop him, he turned around and took a swing at him to his face, which verified Mr. [WITNESS #1] statement Mr. Chamlee tried to punch him.
Mr. Chamlee then continued to walk towards Mr. [WITNESS #1] pointing his finger at him in the video camera footage. He the proceeded to walk to the back of the store to grab another 12 pack of beer and walked out of the store. Mr. [WITNESS #1] stated when Mr. Chamlee came towards him pointing his finger at him he told him he was calling the cops. Mr. [WITNESS #1] stated Mr. Chamlee replied saying, “do what the f*ck you want and just call.” He stated Mr. Chamlee continued cursing, which the video showed other customers inside the store when the incident occurred.
Mr. [WITNESS #1] and the store manager stated Mr. Chamlee always come in the store and they sometimes give him items for free. The store manager stated the owner would like for Mr Chamlee to be criminal trespassed from the store.
Mr. Chamlee was arrested for the listed charges and also Criminal Trespassed from the property. Mr. Chamlee was then transported to the Newton County Detention Center without further incident.
Upon my arrival, to the Detention Intake area, I secured my county issued firearm inside the trunk of my patrol unit and escorted Mr. Chamlee inside the building to the holding cell and turned over to Detention Officer Hall #862.
Photos and video camera footage was uploaded to Evidence.com via Axon Capture.
Warrants will be obtained.
Mr. [WITNESS #1] was provided a business card with a case number.
