On 06/21/2025, at approximately 1042 hours, I, Officer Hardeman, was patrolling the area of Palace St/ W Quilly St, when I observed an older black male in a white t-shirt run from a black in color 2011 Cadillac CTS [REDACTED] and then enter the driver seat of a silver in color Chevy Silverado [REDACTED] and speed off.
I then saw the driver of the Cadillac flag me down by waving her hand. I approached the Cadillac and the driver, who was later identified as [VICTIM #1] ([REDACTED BY AGENCY]81), advised the guy in the silver truck had just stolen her firearm.
At this time, I activated my emergency equipment and began searching the area for the truck. I then located the truck at the stop sign at N 8th St/ W Cherry St. I then deployed my department-issued firearm. I began giving verbal commands for the driver to show his hands. The driver complied and was identified as Cedric Mayes ([REDACTED BY AGENCY]72). A black in color Taurus G2C (SN: ABM310417) was found in the passenger seat of the truck.
Cedric was mirandized and advised that he started following [VICTIM #1] from E Broadway and then stopped at her vehicle when he saw her at Palace St/ W Quilly. St. Cedric then advised he approached her vehicle to talk to her and that [VICTIM #1] then pulled a gun on him. Officer Tomlinson then asked what [VICTIM #1] was upset about and Cedric advised it was because he was trying to talk to her about where she was last night and why she wasn’t with him.
Cedric advised he and [VICTIM #1] have been together for approximately 3 and a half years. Cedric stated that when [VICTIM #1] pointed the gun at him, he snatched the gun from her hands. I then asked Cedric what caused him to run to his vehicle and take off from the scene. Cedric advised that [VICTIM #1] then attempted to hit him with her vehicle after he took the firearm.
Cedric then advised he left the scene to return the firearm to [VICTIM #1]’s daughter who resides at the 800 block of N 8th St. While speaking with Cedric, I observed a red in color stain on the right side of his shirt which appeared to be blood. Cedric did not have any visible injuries other than a small laceration on his bottom lip. The stain was photographed.
Officer Wong and Officer Zubia made contact with [VICTIM #1] at the 800 Block of N 8th St. [VICTIM #1] told officers that Cedric texted her around 7am stating that he would “see her soon”. [VICTIM #1] stated that Cedric was upset that she was seeing another man. [VICTIM #1] then stated that Cedric pulled up next to her on E Broadway St/N Hill St and stated that they needed to talk. Cedric then followed her to Palace St/ W Quilly St.
[VICTIM #1] then advised Cedric blocked her from leaving by pulling in front of her vehicle. [VICTIM #1] then advised Cedric approached her vehicle on the driver’s side window. [VICTIM #1] then reached for her firearm. [VICTIM #1] advised as she grabbed her firearm, Cedric reached into the driver’s side window and attempted to grab the firearm from her hands. [VICTIM #1] advised that Cedric grabbed her right wrist tightly, causing her hand to limp, and this is when Cedric took the firearm. [VICTIM #1] did have visible injuries on her right wrist, which was captured on Officer Wong’s body-worn camera. [VICTIM #1] advised that during the struggle, she broke her left index finger and her left thumb.
Officer Wong advised that [VICTIM #1]’s left index finger and thumb were purple in color, consistent with bruising, and that her index finger appeared disfigured by being bent. [VICTIM #1] declined medical treatment by EMS.
[VICTIM #1] advised that after Cedric took her firearm, he then began to point it at her while stating, “who you gonna shoot now”.
[VICTIM #1] also advised that she and Cedric were engaged and used to live together, but haven’t done so since March of 2025.
Due to the visible injuries and what I observed on the scene, Cedric was placed under arrest. Cedric was then transported to Spalding County Jail, where he was turned over to jail staff.
While at the jail, Cedric consented to me searching his phone. While looking through his and [VICTIM #1]’s messages, I observed a message from Cedric stating, “Ill be down there waiting on you when you get there”. The prior messages seemed to be an argument with Cedric accusing [VICTIM #1] of being with another man.
Cedric’s vehicle was turned over to [REDACTED] ([REDACTED BY AGENCY]01). I will be obtaining warrants on Cedric next date.
