Officer’s Narrative:

On 01-03-2025 at approximately 2342 hours I, Deputy Betsill, responded in non emergency mode to 601 S 8th Street, Spalding Regional Hospital”, in reference to Assault.

Upon my arrival I made contact with [WITNESS #1] in room six of the E.R.. [WITNESS #1] stated that at 0848 hours she received a call from her son [REDACTED BY AGENCY] who was staying with his father, Kevin Kirkland at [2700 BLOCK] Jackson Road. [WITNESS #1] stated that [REDACTED BY AGENCY] advised her that he had got a spanking and was crying wishing to come home. [WITNESS #1] stated that she went and picked up [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and her other two children, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and then returned home.

[WITNESS #1] stated that when she got home and witnessed [REDACTED BY AGENCY] in the light he had severe bruising, abrasions and cuts to his head, face, shoulder and legs. [WITNESS #1] said that she then called 911 for police and EMS to respond. EMS transported [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and Barnesville Police Department advised Spalding Dispatch that the incident occurred in Spalding.

[WITNESS #1] showed me a text from Kevin that stated, “I am so so sorry [REDACTED] Those are our kids I love them more than anything in this world. I should not have freaked out that bad. I will never lay another finger on them I will take their game away or something. Just know I am sorry and it was an accident on his neck and face I would never in a million years do that on purpose. You know that and so do they. I know your going to be mad for a while but I need you to know I will never hurt our kids”.

I then spoke with [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and asked him what happened. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] sad that himself, [REDACTED BY AGENCY], Kevin and Kevins girlfriend [WITNESS #2] were eating dinner when Kevin became mad about something [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was doing. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated that Kevin grabbed him by the back of the neck and head and threw him on the floor. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated after this Kevin then again grabbed him and forced him into his room, throwing him once again on the floor causing his right shoulder to hurt. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] then said that Kevin slapped him in the face and then began beating him with a belt. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated he was in severe pain and tried to get away but was unable to get away from Kevin.

[REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated that after this incident he called his mother, [WITNESS #1], and asked to come home.

I documented all of [REDACTED BY AGENCY] injuries with photographs. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had extreme bruising and abrasions to the left side of his face and head as well as on his right forearm and both of his legs. There was an obvious handprint on the let side of his face even hours after the incident occurred. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had stated that his father had used a belt and several places on his legs it looked as if there was an outline of a belt buckle. At a later time I verified with [WITNESS #1] that no broken bones or fractures were reported by the hospital.

On 01-04-2025 at approximately 0105 hours I made contact with Kevin at his home at [2700 BLOCK] Jackson Road. I asked Kevin what happened and he stated that he only hit his son a few times and he wouldn’t have hit him in the head if had not been squirming and moving around so much. At that time I advised Kevin that he was under arrest and after getting him clothes he was placed under arrest with his hands secured behind his back in hand cuffs that were checked for proper fit and double locked. Kevin was then placed in the back of my patrol unit that was checked before and after for controband. Kevin was then transported to Spalding County Jail and turned over to Jail staff for processing.

While still on scene at Jackson Road I made contact with [WITNESS #2], Kevins girlfriend, who would not elaborate on what happened only stated she knew it was bad.

Investigator Michelle was notified of the proceedings and advised he would set up a forensic interview for [REDACTED BY AGENCY] at a later date.

A DFCS referral was completed and I was made aware they are investigating same date.

On 01-05-2025 I obtained warrant 25-EW001061 for Cruelty to Children 1st Degree, 25-EW-001062 Aggravated Assault, 25-EW-001063 False Imprisonment, and 25-EW-001064 Cruelty to Children 3rd Degree through Magistrate Judge Parks for Kevin Kirkland.
