Reporting Deputy responded to a motor vehicle accident on Old Norman Town Road. While in route a citizen told 911 dispatchers that the driver was drunk and left the scene in a black Suburban heading toward Hwy 130 /Loop Road. Reporting Deputy saw a vehicle matching the description of the Suburban and made a traffic stop. As I approached the driver I recognized the passenger as [WITNESS #1]. In conversation I asked who had an accident and [WITNESS #1] said his brother and motioned to the rear seat driver’s side. Reporting Deputy opened the door and asked Michael Anthony Guthrie if he had an accident and if he was ok? Guthrie said yes sir my tire rod end broke!
Reporting Deputy got Guthrie out and asked about a spot on his shirt that looked like blood. Guthrie said it was not blood and said he was ok. Reporting Deputy could tell that Guthrie was highly intoxicated. I found a small bottle of liquor and a cup that had overturned and wet his pants. It appeared that Guthrie had been mixing drinks.
Deputy Milton had arrived and started his DUI investigation while Reporting Deputy went back and talked to [WITNESS #1]. [WITNESS #1] said that Michael Anthony had called him asking him to come and get him because he had ran in the ditch. [WITNESS #1] expressed his concerns about his brother driving drunk in conversation with me. [WITNESS #1] also agreed his brother was very drunk and had no business driving. [WITNESS #1] also said the truck had no tag or insurance and belonged to his aunt.
Deputy Milton continued his driving under the influence investigation and transported Michael Anthony Guthrie back to the crash scene. Reporting Deputy gave the driver of the Suburban, Edward Jiminez his drivers license back and told him he could go.
Just as Edward pulled off from the stop I realized that I had not ran his drivers license. Reporting Deputy pulled Edward over again and explained that I needed to see his license again. After having dispatch run the license they came back suspended for a failure to appear Baldwin County and a probation violation warrant. Reporting Deputy took Edward into custody hand cuffed him behind his back placed him in the rear seat of my patrol truck. As I was about leave and transport Edward to the jail Deputy Milton asked me if there was a gun in the vehicle because he found many rounds or ammunition and a magazine at the crash site. As I started searching the vehicle Deputy Milton radioed saying that Guthrie told him that he had for certain left a gun in Suburban. Deputy Clifton arrived on scene and assisted me in searching the Suburban where I did eventually find a Glock pistol under the rear seat where Michael Anthony Guthrie was sitting. The gun was stolen from Toombs County September 2024. Reporting Deputy transported Edward to the Toombs County Jail and turned him over to booking staff for the probation warrant from Baldwin County.
Due to the fact that Edwards drivers license were issued to him at approximately 7 months ago and he stated that he was not aware that he had a suspended license I did not write him a citation for suspended license at this time.
Note – upon arrival at the jail Reporting Deputy exited my patrol truck and got Jiminez out of the back seat and closed the door. Seconds later the alarm and siren activated inside the sally port. I’m not certain why the alarm and siren activated. Reporting Deputy could have accidentally pressed the panic button on my key fob, however that does not explain the siren activation.
Reporting Deputy notified jail administrator [REDACTED] of the incident.
