On June 30, 2020, at approximately 12:03am Sgt. Dalton, Deputy Fincher, Deputy Pack, and Officer Byrd with the Tunnel Hill Police Department were dispatched to [900 block] Townsend Lane in reference to a single family structure fire. Dispatch advised that the caller stated that Dan Christensen had set the residence on fire.

Officer Byrd arrived shortly before Sgt. Dalton. Sgt. Dalton observed Christensen standing in the front doorway attempting to put the fire out with a water hose. Most of the fire seemed to be extinguished but the front door and the entrance had heavy fire damage.

Officer Byrd advised Christensen several times to get out of the residence but he continued to try and put the fire out with the water hose. Christensen was bare footed and was standing in the middle of the heavy fire damage just inside the doorway.

The Whitfield County Fire Department then arrived on scene. Fire personnel had to tell Christensen several times to move so they could check the residence. Christensen just kept saying that he was going to put the fire out.

Sgt. Dalton asked Christensen what had happened at the residence. Christensen advised that he just got home and saw the smoke in the residence. Christensen advised he was trying to put the fire out with the water hose.

Sgt. Dalton spoke with [WITNESS #1] who was also at the residence. Sgt. Dalton observed a laceration on [WITNESS #1] arm and it was bleeding. [WITNESS #1] provided the following information.

When [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2] got back to the residence Christensen was mad about something. Christensen said something about burning the house down to [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2]. [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2] went to the bedroom to go to bed. [WITNESS #1] woke up an hour later due to smoke in the residence. [WITNESS #1] came out of the bedroom and seen that the living room was on fire. [WITNESS #1] got [WITNESS #2] and as much stuff as he could and they exited the residence.

Once outside [WITNESS #1] saw Christensen at the front of the residence. Christensen yelled at [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2] stating that he told them so. Christensen then started trying to put the fire out when law enforcement arrived. [WITNESS #1] and [WITNESS #2] also had several animals still in the residence. [WITNESS #1] had been living with Christensen for two weeks and [WITNESS #2] had been at the residence for two days. [WITNESS #1] said that Christensen had been drinking all day.

The fire department was able to remove all the animals safely from the residence.

Sgt. Dalton made contact with Detective Guay and advised him of the incident. Detective Guay responded and the scene was turned over to him. Sgt. Dalton did not speak with [WITNESS #2] prior to Detective Guay’s arrival.

This case will remain active.
